If you have always wondered what it would be like to set sail for the lush, tropical beauty of the Caribbean, a Caribbean cruise might be just what the doctor ordered. One of the best things about cruising is that you pack and unpack one time in order to visit a smorgasbord of heavenly destinations that all offer their own variety of fun and fantasy under the sun. While onboard your Caribbean cruise ship, you will enjoy the luxury and service that is comparable to a five-star hotel, as long as you can get past the cramped quarters that you will be sleeping in! Rest assured that sleeping is about all you will find time to do in your state room, since activities and recreation are abounding on these modern day resorts on the water.

Types of Caribbean Cruises

If you decide to book a Caribbean cruise, you will need to choose between itineraries that run from the western, eastern and southern islands. Each route will offer a variety of scenery and cultures, and each port of call will allow you the opportunity to experience different activities and sights. Every itinerary will undoubtedly include a few islands that you are familiar with, and a few others that will be brand new for you to explore. The ships will dock at a variety of these ports throughout the length of your Caribbean cruise so that you can disembark and enjoy the sights and sounds of the various Caribbean cultures. You can also opt to spend some of your time on the ship itself, and with so many wonderful activities and so much delicious food, you will not be disappointed in your decision to stay onboard at times.

Booking your Caribbean Cruise

If you have decided that a Caribbean cruise is the choice for your next vacation, the next step will be to select the cruise line that you want to set sail with. Nearly every cruise line will offer trips to the Caribbean, and many will be fairly similar in the ports of call that they stop at and the types of activities that will be available. You can choose a Caribbean cruise based on the recommendation of a friend, or on your own desire to explore a particular cruise line for yourself. Perhaps you will make your selection based on the advice of the travel agent that you hire, which is a preferred method for booking a Caribbean cruise, especially if you are a first time cruiser. This professional service will not only be able to make all of your arrangements for you, they will also have advice on what to pack and how to prepare for your journey. Whatever ship and itinerary you decide to take, you will most definitely enjoy the vacation of a lifetime. Bon voyage!

A cruise is an ideal vacation if you are ready for a little adventure and a lot of relaxation. Getting on a boat and setting sail for a remote island or distant land is a romantic gift for a new bride. Heading out in search of new sights, sounds and other experiences is the perfect thing to spark your kids’ imaginations. The great thing about a cruise is that it can be almost anything you need it to be when it comes time for vacation. It can be private and intimate or it can be a social goldmine with excitement and entertainment around every corner. The only issue that may continue to nag your mind is the cost. Since cruises offer all-inclusive deals with lodging, passage, food and entertainment, aren’t they expensive? Especially new couples starting out, or families trying to budget a vacation in the midst of supporting growing children, the cost can be daunting. Still, the trip, food and entertainment are hard to just forget about when it comes time to plan a nice vacation. So, for all of those adventurous, yet luxury oriented people out there, here are a few ways to get on the boat without sinking your ship.

‘Tis the Season

No doubt about it, there is a season for cruising. While summer is a typical time for families to go on road trips and students run to the beaches in spring, cruises typically happen at Christmastime. Why is that? During the winter is when people get very tired of the cold. Cabin fever starts to hit and they start thinking about warmer climates and more activity. Right after Christmas, business all over the country slows down nearly to a halt and time off becomes more available to workers. A cruise is an ideal solution for winter blues because of the atmosphere of a cruise ship. The weather is warm, but unlike other tropical vacations, the cruise involves travel during the whole time away. That is ideal for people feeling stuffed into confinement by the cold weather. What all of that means is that cruises are very popular in the middle of the northern winter, so, add a little supply and demand and you get the picture. When looking for a discount cruise, avoid holidays. Also, make sure you find out when the rainy season is of your cruise destination. The cruise price may be extremely low in the early fall, but the exchange of being rained out of any land activities may not be worth it.

Before You Pack, Look at Packages

Even at the grocery store it’s cheaper to buy in bulk. Whether it’s cereal or dog food, the bigger the package, the lower the average cost. The same holds true for vacations. If you are setting out to find a discount cruise, look for packages. For example, if you can combine your flight and boat passage, you can probably save big bucks. If you have the option of an all inclusive or pay as you go, choose all inclusive. You will end up spending less money in the end and still enjoy all of the comforts the cruise has to offer.

The Anatomy of a Cruise Ship

One final way to save money on a cruise vacation is to be careful when selecting your cabin. It is impossible for every room on the ship to have a balcony, or even a window. If you need to watch your budget, forget the view from your room. You probably won’t be spending much time there anyway. Cruise ships have large decks with 360° views. They also have nearly constant entertainment, and frequent stops. Don’t blow your vacation money on small conveniences, but get the most for your money by settling for a slightly less desirable cabin.

It’s not everyday when everything – from a good Caribbean travel package to the weather and your budget – just magically convenes into one single, perfect and fun Caribbean vacation. That stuff is for fairytale vacations, certainly not for simple, ordinary folks like you.
Â
At the very best, you probably find a so-so Caribbean travel package that is slightly cheaper than the last one you checked out but has better options than that other cheap one you were considering. So you come home, work out a Caribbean travel plan and budget, and then log on to the site to book the package…only to find that the deal is already fully-booked. Just your luck.
Â
One thing you should remember about Caribbean travel packages is that they are often offered only for very a limited period. So why wait? If you want to get that Caribbean travel package you want and get an edge over the competition, then do all that planning and budget analyzing BEFORE you search for deals.
Â
And once you’re done with that, check out the list of Caribbean travel package resources we have compiled for you below:
Â
TripAdvisor.com
Â
TripAdvisor is a travel site that offers reviews of hotels and accommodations, food, activities, airfare, transportation, cruises, resorts, and many more from destinations worldwide. For the best deals, you can visit TripAdvisor’s SmartDeals page where you can find great Caribbean travel packages on the best hotels in the Caribbean.
Â
AmericanExpress.com
Â
For some people, last-minute bargains can be a great source of excellent travel deals. If you’re a haggler by nature, one who wants to haggle even when pressed for time, then American Express’ Last Minute Caribbean travel packages might just be what you’re looking for. The site offers current listings of their bargains and specials so check back often. If you don’t find what you’re looking for on the first page, there is also a search tool where you can search for bargains by destination, travel option or activity.
Freedom is a whopping 110,000-ton vessel featuring balconies on 60 percent of it’s ocean view staterooms. CCL makes luxury cruising more affordable and yet, this line ensures that every family member takes home a custom-made memory of his or her own. You will get the chance to visit Athens, Rhodes, Naples, Ephesus, Istanbul, and Rome and more. On board, there are 22 lounges and bars, an Internet caf, a 13,300-square-foot spa with outdoor jogging track, and four swimming pools, one with a 214-foot-long water slide. Dining choices include two-level formal restaurants with extensive menus and wine lists, a 1,400-seat casual poolside eatery featuring a 24-hour pizzeria, and a reservations-only supper club for intimate fine dining. Teens have their own fully supervised, state-of-the art clubs, and so do younger kids. It’s no wonder that cruise passengers, no matter where they are on shore, are always excited to get back on the ship.

So you’ve decided to set sail and spend your next vacation cruising in the lap of luxury on boats the size of small cities to exotic ports of call. Now, how do you decide which cruise to choose and where to go when the number of choices can be staggering? By being aware of a few simple guidelines and suggestions, you can narrow your choices down and find the perfect ship to the perfect destination.

First, decide how long you want to cruise for. A lengthy transatlantic voyage is obviously out of the question if you only have a long weekend to spare for your vacation. Cruises that last only three to four days are inexpensive, but you’ll only visit one or two ports. Plus, your fellow passengers are more likely to be of the youthful, partying variety. Week-long cruises are the most popular, are relatively inexpensive, and generally visit more ports of call. Seven days, however, can pass by very quickly, and your fellow passengers are still more likely to be partiers. Finally, cruises longer than seven days allow you to visit more ports of call in more exotic locations, such as South America or the Mediterranean, and you’ll be more relaxed with more sedate fellow passengers. Unfortunately, the amount of money and vacation time required can be cost-prohibitive. Knowing how much time you have to spend on a cruise necessarily narrows your choices of where you will be able to travel to. If more exotic locations do appeal to you but you have a shorter timeframe, you can always assess the viability of flying to your locale and then taking a three or four day cruise once you are there. For example, cruising to an Asian country can be extremely expensive, but once you’re in China, a cruise down the Yangzhi is pretty reasonable.

Next, consider how much money you have to spend. There is a great deal of variability in prices, and you can constantly find great deals on the internet or through a travel agent. Just don’t forget to factor in port charges, cruise cancellation insurance, and airfare – if it’s not already included in the price of the cruise. Knowing your budget in conjunction with your timeline will help you narrow down your choices.

Time and money are not the only deciding factors. Other factors include whether you want to travel in the summer or in the winter, whether or not you want a cruise that will allow you to explore your hobbies, and how many ports you want to stop in. Nothing is more frustrating than being stuck at sea, while you know that you’re sailing past gorgeous, sun-drenched islands. Some destinations are easily accessible and actually more popular in the winter – the Caribbean, Mexico and the Panama Canal, for example – but travelers have to beware of hurricane season. Alaskan and European cruises, on the other hand, are typically not available in the winter.

In addition to money, time and itinerary, consider any possible preferences you might have for a particular cruise ship. While differences between the ships have narrowed over time, some are a bit more luxurious than others. Read evaluations of cruise ships online or in travel publications, interview acquaintances, or ask a travel agent.

Finally, once you have decided how much time you have, how much you want to spend, who you want to cruise with, and where you want to go, you will often face having to decide between very similar options. Let’s use, as an example, the Caribbean. How do you know whether you want to go East or West? What in the world is the difference? Both have sandy beaches, clear blue water, and plenty of sun; both offer a variety of water sports and opportunities for shopping; and both are located in practically the same place geographically. If you check out the time you spend at sea, however, the ports of call you visit, and the shore excursions offered, you will find slight differences between the two. Eastern Caribbean cruises usually set off from Florida, spend less time at sea, and hop from island to island, visiting places like Puerto Rice and St. Maarten. You will have more opportunities to shop and to enjoy the beach. Western Caribbean cruises, on the other, visit ports of call that are geographically farther apart, such as Cozumel and Jamaica. They depart not only from Florida but also from Texas and Louisiana, and they spend more time at sea. Shore excursions, however, are more unique than simple beachcomber activities, including opportunities to see Mayan Ruins and lush tropical rain forests.

In the end, remember that, with all of the options available for your next cruise, now is not the time to sacrifice what you really want – whether it’s the opportunity to have your hair braided in Nassau or whale watch in Alaska.

It seems like everybody these days is setting sail, cruising around the deep blue ocean on ships the size of small cities. Travelers return from their ocean adventures with strange and marvelous tales of grand movie theaters, huge climbing walls, water slides, and mounds of delicious food, but is this the reason why cruises have grown in popularity? What is it, exactly, that makes cruises so appealing to so many people.

Perhaps it’s the price. Long cruises, especially, can be expensive, and port fees, cruise cancellation insurance, and airfare (if it’s not included in the price), not to mention pricey shore excursions, can destroy your vacation budget. Just like with air travel, however, significant discounts can be found online and through travel agents, and when travelers factor in the meals, accommodation, and shipboard entertainment that are included in the fare, cruises can actually be pretty reasonable. There’s also less room for the typical nasty surprises that accompany traveling to exotic locations on your own.

Unlike land tours, which offer a similar sense of security when traveling, cruises also allow passengers a great deal of personal freedom and the ability to set their own pace. If you don’t feel like getting up for breakfast, then you can stay in your cabin and make it down in time for lunch. On a tour, if you miss breakfast, you might have missed the bus for the entire day, and you’ll end up stuck in your hotel, while everyone else is seeing the sights. Cruises have a definite relaxation factor that accompanies the fact that you are, essentially, staying in a floating hotel, which is one reason why cruises attract passengers who are celebrating honeymoons, birthdays, anniversaries, and family reunions.

The fact that cruises are actually carrying passengers from one port of call to the next with a minimum of fuss or fanfare is another reason for their popularity. Unlike planes, trains, or, God forbid, automobiles, passenger can sleep, eat, exercise, and even party while the ship is transporting them from point A to point B. As mentioned earlier, the pace is slower, but for many, that’s a benefit rather than a drawback of cruise travel. Also, once you get to your port of call, you’ll be all rested up for duty-free shopping (in the Caribbean, at least) or scuba diving or whatever draws you to exotic locales in the first place.

Traveling also entails meeting a lot of new people—some of whom are nice and some of whom are not nice. Dealing with nasty flight attendants, shady cab drivers, and grouchy hotel clerks can add a level of stress to travel that detracts from the sense of excitement and adventure that should accompany any vacation. Perhaps it’s because everyone’s so relaxed or perhaps it’s because the staff is brainwashed (or desperate for a generous gratuity), but, in general, fellow travelers and staff on cruise ships seem to be a whole lot happier, nicer, and more accommodating than your average human being you encounter every day. Your fellow cruisers, who come from a variety of backgrounds, are not only happier but also more interesting to be around, and you’re actually encouraged and able to socialize on a cruise.

But let’s be honest. Nothing’s more important to you than your stomach. Airlines understand that. It seems like, on some long-haul flights, attendants are walking around every hour with another opportunity to stuff your face. Airline food, however, will never be able to compete with cruise ship food. Food is often the highlight of a cruise experience. Whether it’s at a buffet, in a dining room, or in your cabin, the food is delicious, and there’s plenty of it. In fact, you might find yourself gaining a few pounds if you’re not careful. Luckily, that’s what vacation is all about. If you are worried about your waistline, there are plenty of opportunities to exercise and stay fit onboard.

Finally, one of the major reasons why cruise travel is growing in popularity is the variety it offers. Over 200 cruise ships float in the world’s oceans and rivers today, and that number is growing by the year. Just like with air travel, there are the big names—Princess, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and Carnival—and they each have their own fleet of ships. There are also smaller cruise lines, tailored to a specific region or for a specific purpose. These days, if you do your research, you can find the perfect cruise ship to fit your needs, wants and interests.

Â

Decadent buffets, VIP service, round-the-clock entertainment, and exotic shore excursions—it’s easy to see why more Americans than ever before are shelling out big bucks for long, relaxing cruises on ships the size of small cities. Kids love cruising, too, on the right ships heading to the right places and parents are booking cruises for their family vacations. Everyone knows that if the kids aren’t happy on a family vacation, then the parents aren’t happy either. That’s why it’s best for parents to do their research and figure out before they book an expensive cruise to New England whether or not their kids will be miserable with their decision.

Remember that cruising is as much about the experience at sea as it is about the outings and destinations. Finding cruise ships that cater to children young and old will help you relax between ports of call. Three cruise ships that are family friendly are Disney, Royal Caribbean, and Princess. As for destinations, the Caribbean, Hawaii and Alaska are perennial favorites for children and are reachable by the aforementioned ships that cater to children and offer family friendly shore excursions.

Disney’s ships, Magic and Wonder, stop at various ports of call in the Caribbean, and they cater both their shore excursions and on-board activities to families. For longer 7-day cruises, families stay at a resort three days prior to boarding the ship and have an opportunity to visit theme parks in the area. Families are transferred by land to the ship, which docks in Port Canaveral, and visit a variety of ports, including St. Maarten, St. Thomas, Nassau, and Disney’s own private island Castaway Cay. The stop in Nassau, for example, offers both children and adults a number of shore excursions that explore the old historic town and the pristine blue waters and abundant ocean life. Children can sail through the water on a catamaran, power boat, or glass bottom boat, cavort with sting rays or dolphins, or snorkel through the aquatic reefs. While adults take the opportunity to shop or gamble, kids can have their hair braided into dozens of tiny cornrows. Don’t forget that, after late December 2006, all cruises to the Caribbean will require visitors to have a passport.

A cruise to Hawaii is another tropical adventure that kids will enjoy if the shore excursions are family friendly. Both Royal Caribbean and Princess cruise lines offer trips to the Aloha State that the whole family can enjoy. Cruises often stop at islands as diverse as Honolulu, Kona, Oahu, Hilo, and Maui. Kids can visit Waikiki beach, swim in Hanauma Bay, or see aquatic life in a submarine or a glass bottom boat. They can swim with the dolphins, snorkel with the sea turtles, or go whale watching. On dry land, they can go horseback riding, learn about Polynesian culture, or witness volcanic geology firsthand, watching molten lava roll into the sea. Adults may even enjoy introducing their children to kayaking and sport fishing. The opportunities for adventure in Hawaii are as diverse as the island itself, but they can be pricey. Plan ahead what you would like to spend your money on, and consider the option of seeking excursions on your own while you are in port.

Alaska, the land of glaciers and ice, may not be quite the same as a tropical island in the Caribbean or Pacific, but, given the right ship, it offers unparalleled adventures for both children and adults alike. Both Princess and Royal Caribbean offer family friendly cruises to Alaska. Active families can kayak in Prince William Sound, bicycle around a glacier fed lake, or hike through an Alaskan rainforest. For an educational experience, kids can visit a wildlife preserve for eagles, take a wildlife safari, or go on a whale watching excursion. As beautiful as Alaska is, however, younger children might not be able to appreciate the scenery, so keep your children’s age in mind.

Whether you decide on a cruise to the Caribbean, Hawaii, or Alaska, it’s important to be aware of a few simple suggestions to have the best shore excursion possible. Remember your children’s strengths and weakness; don’t book a catamaran ride or lengthy bus ride for children prone to motion sickness. Make sure the shore excursions aren’t too lengthy, and remember to bring snacks along. Finally, once you decide on the perfect excursion, book it as soon as possible, either online or right when you arrive, and don’t forget to arrange babysitting beforehand for young children who may need to stay on board. Whatever your family decides to do, whether you pan for gold or take a horseback ride to a glacier, your kids are sure to have an once-in-a-lifetime experience.
